Welcome to Room 11, 2nd Grade!

My Name is Lisa Berghaus. I am so happy to have your child in my class this year! The year should be very rewarding for your child as he/she continues learning reading, writing, and math skills through a variety of learning situations and activities. I truly believe that every child does learn at their own pace and ability. My role is to help foster this. I am excited to share his/her learning journey with them and hope that we can all work as a team to help your child achieve all that he/she can be.

About Mrs. Berghaus

I'd like to tell you alittle about myself. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Child Development; a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a CLAD emphasis; and a Master's Degree in Education with an emphasis in Teaching Reading. I have been public school teaching for 15 years and have teaching experiences in Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and middle school. I joined LEUSD in July of 2000. I have been happily married for 12 years and have 2 children- a 16 year old step-daughter and a 4 year old daughter.

Classroom Expectations

The concept of RESPECT is essential in our classroom and guides all of the rules and expectations for the students and myself. We are all expected to treat one another with respect.
1. Speak to others with kind, polite words.
2. Listen to others' ideas and not judge them.
2. Hands and feet to yourself.
3. When someone needs help, be the first to offer the help.
4. Enter the classroom ready to learn.
5. Remember treat others the way you want to be treated.

Classroom Behavior Management

The behavior management system used in our classroom is a color system. It is very visual and helps remind students, on a daily basis, how their day is going.
Green - stands for "Wonderful!" Every child starts on green everyday. The goal is to stay there.
Yellow - stands for "Be Careful!"
Blue - stands for "Watch Out!"
Red - Visit to the Principal, or a Note Home.

To Go Home Folder/Homework Folder

Each student has a "To Go Home" folder. In this folder you will find items like corrected student work and notices from me, the school office, or the school district. Please check this folder nightly and remove these items. Please make sure that the folder returns to school each day so that we may continue to use it as a form of communication.

Weekly Homework Packet

In addition, you will find the "Weekly Homework" packet. The packet will be sent home on Monday and is due Friday of that week. Each night your child should work on this packet. You will find spelling, reading, and writing. It is expected that your child will also read for 5 minutes and practice the math fact families, nightly. If you find that your child is working for more than 20 minutes per night on their homework, please let me know so that we may work together on solving this problem.

Classroom Volunteer Information

I would like to encourage you to volunteer your time in our classroom. If you are interested in working with small groups of children or attending field trips, you will need a Purple Volunteer Badge. You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, apply for a background/fingerprint check, and wait for approval.
If you are interested in helping the teacher with other things you will need a Red Volunteer Badge. You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, and wait for approval.
If you already have a badge from the last school year, please contact the school office to find out if there is anything that you need to do to update your information with the school district.
