Welcome to Room 15, Second Grade!

My name is Lauren Rutherford and I am honored to be your child's teacher for this very important year in Second Grade. This year will be rewarding for your child as he/she continues learning reading , writing and math skills through a variety of learning activities.

Language Arts falls under six main themes from our reading series: Silly Stories, Nature Walk and Fables, Around Town with Neighborhood and Community, Amazing Animals, Family Time with Biographies and Talent Show. Reading, Writing and spelling, vocabulary and grammar will be intergrated through our study of thematic literature.

Grade level Standards and objectives will be met in Math through our math series and supplemental materials. The program consists of many instructional components such as: problem of the day, sprial review, daily lessons, reteaching and enrichment.

Our Social Studies and Science fall under specific themes. In Science, the themes are: Life Cycles (plants and animals), Earth's resources (rock, soils and fossils), Motion and Forces and Magnets and sound. In Social Studies, the themes are: Communities, Map Skills, U.S. Government, and Family History.

Homework helps reinforce the skills and concepts learned in class. Your child must read a minimum of 15 minutes a night and complete a language arts activity and math sheet(s). Homework folders need to be returned daily. No child should spend more than 30 minutes on homework. Please look over your child's homework and help them when needed. If they are having troubles please let me know.

Things to help ensure your child has a successful year in second grade:

Students entering 2nd grade should already know the first 200 words. Students should learn to read at least 400 words by the end of 2nd grade to be on task. Download all the Fry's Sight Words and practice with your child at home.
