Welcome to Mrs. Spillman's Class
Room 19
Hello Incoming First Graders!
School Supplies
Supplies are now on sale for great prices at Walmart and Target so here is a quick list that you can pick up over summer. It would be helpful if each student could bring:
2 boxes of pencils, 6 glue sticks, hand pencil sharpener with a shavings compartment, 2-Dry erase crayons or markers (no red), 2 boxes of Crayons 16-24 count (Crayola works best), 1 box of Kleenex, a good pink or white eraser, and a backpack (should be able to hold a folder, their lunch and snack. (*No wheels on the backpacks please).
Students do not need a pencil box, I have them already purchased and in their desks.
If you are able to make Donataions for the classroom I would greatly appreciate any of the following items:
Kleenex, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, baby wipes, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, Markers, Glue sticks (lots), Crayola Dry Erase Crayons, Dry Erase Markers (Thin, Black, Expo brand), Any fun art supplies that you might have laying around (buttons, pompoms,...) Old magazines that we can cut pictures out of, Large zip lock bags, Sandwich size zip lock bags, Cottonballs, colored copy paper. Thanks for your support! :)
Parents if you want to give your child a jump start into first grade you may do the following:
*Review letters and sounds to make sure they have not forgotten them over summer.
*Review their Kindergarten sight words to ensure they still know them.
*On the ccecubs.com main page, click on Standards and go to the bottom of the page, cilck on download Fry's Word Lists. Start at the number 1 and practice reading the words. Lists numbered 1 - 25 are first grade words. When tested on these at school they will not be allowed to sound them out. They have to know them from memory, they are sight words.
*Pick up some one inch lined paper, with the dotted line in the middle. Have your child practice writing their name, the alphabet, colors, and Kindergarten Sight Words. Making sure to touch the appropriate lines. For students that are ready, have them write about something fun they have done during the day. Start with a CAPITAL and end with a STOP SIGN (.?!).
A Little Bit About Me
Hello, my name is Holly Spillman and this is my 6th year teaching First Grade here at Cottonwood Canyon Elementary. My husband Tom and I live in Canyon Hills with our two sons Tommy and Trent who are 13 and 11. I enjoy spending time with my family playing all kinds of games, going to the movies, camping, hiking and going to the beach together. I grew up in Provo, Utah and have lived here in California for 13 years now. Our family stays pretty busy with basketball practices, and doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu wrestling throughout the week, so I understand how busy your families schedules can be.
Mission Statement
As you know First Grade is a very important year. I have a comprehensive curriculum planned and am confident your child will have a successful First Grade year. My mission as a teacher is to instill in my students lifelong enthusiasm for learning. I want all my students to believe in themselves and have the confidence to make mistakes and learn from them. I want to treat all children the way I would like my own children to be treated.
My mission also includes parent participation. I want you parents to realize that we are co-educators, partners in your childs educational journey. I want you to know I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of their lives and take part in the shaping of their future.
I am thankful to have such a great group of students this year and I'm looking forward to a wonderful year together.
Homework
I send a weekly homework packet home on Fridays. They are due the following Friday morning. Homework includes spelling activities, reading comprehension, poem of the week, math practice, and a reading log. Students in first grade should read at least 15 minutes each evening. This can include high-frequency word practice, phonics readers, and story books. Please sign the packet and help your child to be responsible for completing their homework each week. *Frequent and consistent reading practice helps them become fluent readers. Please return their Fry's Word Lists in their Homework Folder each day so they can be tested.
Daily Necessities
Please make sure that your child wears comfortable shoes and clothes to school. Children are very active throughout the day. Check the Parent Handbook for school dress code. Please label all personal items (backpack, jackets, sweaters, hats, etc.) If you would like to send a healthy morning snack, we have a short recess during which they may eat. Please encourage your child to use the restroom during recess. However, I do allow them to leave the class when they have an urgent need.
