Hi my name is Jennifer Smith. I am looking forward to being your child's third grade teacher. This is my sixth year teaching at Cottonwood Canyon Elementary and my tenth year of teaching. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Studies, and a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I am married and have a beautiful black lab named Bailey! Becoming a teacher has always been a passion of mine. I love what I do!

Supplies for Mrs. Smith's Class:

Small pencil box or zipper bag that will fit INSIDE DESK

Please purchase brands indicated if possible (they are better quality)

Pencils (2 dozen #2standard pencils)*Pencils may have to be bought again throughout the year* 1 pencil sharpener with cap to catch shavings

1 spiral bound notebooks any color

1 set of multiplication flash cards (teacher supply store 2.99)

1 bottle of Elmer’s Washable Glue (Please no gel or no run glue)

2  Elmer’s Jumbo Glue Sticks

1 Pkg of Crayola Markers Assorted Colors (Regular Size)

1 Pkg of Crayola Colored Pencils

1 box of Crayola Crayons 24 count

     1 Pkg of Expo Dry Erase Markers and 1 eraser

     1 Highlighter

     1 Pkg of loose leaf notebook paper 200 sheets, wide ruled not college.

     1 mini hand sanitizer to keep at desk

     Community Supplies

     1 ream of white Zerox Paper *extra is always appreciated*

     1 or more boxes of Kleenex (we always run out!)

     1 pk Clorox wipes

     1 pk skinny Expo markers (we use them for math everyday)

Backpack-which is clearly labeled with your child’s name and room number. Please use a black sharpie marker, they work best. Students will need to bring their backpacks everyday.

Lunch Box- If your child will be bringing lunch please have them bring a lunch box. Please make sure all lunch boxes are labeled with your child’s name and room number.   

Emergency Kit Items- Please place in a large zip-lock bag labeled with your child's name.

Donations for Mrs. Smith's Class

I gladly welcome donations for our classroom. Here are a few of extra things I can always use. Colored Xerox Paper, White Xerox Paper, Chapter Books (appropriate reading level) or gift card to buy books for our class library, Sharpie Markers- Colored or Black, Playground Balls, White Board Markers (skinny & regular), Clorox wipes

Expectations

I am very excited to be teaching your child. My goal is to help your child achieve what he/she is capable of and bring them beyond to not only meet, but exceed their capabilities. Some characteristics to describe me are caring, enthusiastic, devoted, and responsible, organized and always give my best. I have the same expectations for my students. I want them to enjoy learning and maintain a positive attitude. I would like them to also give their best effort, be responsible for their work, actions, and to be organized. My main expectation and wish, is that they will learn something new each day and value all that they have learned this school year.

Volunteers

I would like to encourage you to volunteer your time in our classroom. If you are interested in working with small groups of children or attending field trips, you will need a Purple Volunteer Badge. You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, apply for a background/fingerprint check, and wait for approval. If you are interested in helping the teacher with other things you will need a Red Volunteer Badge. You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, and wait for approval. If you already have a badge from the last school year, please contact the school office to find out if there is anything that you need to do to update your information with the school district.

Homework

I will be assigning homework on Friday's and it will be due the following Friday. Homework will consist of spelling practice, grammar, cursive, reading comprehension, multiplications facts, and 20 minutes of nightly reading. In addition to the weekly packet, math homework will be assigned nightly. Please make sure your child completes all of their homework each week. Your child will receive a grade for homework.

Weekly Homework Packet If your child has missing assignments or missing homework, they will be expected to finish it and turn it back into the teacher. The status of the homework chart will not be changed, so that we can look for improvement. 3rd Grade Multiplication Facts This chart is designed to allow you to watch yours child's progress in learning multiplication. Fry's Sight Words - Lists 40 Thru 70 Each column represents a list of 10 sight words. Students learn to read each list (in order) and then to spell the words on the lists. There are 1000 Fry's sight words total. Students entering 3rd grade should already know the first 400 words. Students should learn to read at least 700 words by the end of 3rd grade to be on task. Download all the Fry's Sight Words and practice with your child at home.
