Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year!

I am looking forward to meeting everyone at our upcoming back-to-school night.  However, for now here is a little bit about me. This is my ninth year teaching at Cottonwood and my 19th year in education.  Wow, it is hard to believe that so much time has passed.  I started teaching the first year Cottonwood opened and taught 2nd grade for seven years, then move to 3rd grade last year.  I love teaching 3rd grade and I feel blessed to have this privilege.

I received my bachelor degree and teaching credential through California State University, San Marcos and I am currently working on my Master’s degree through Concordia University.

This school year is sure to be an exciting one.  Back-to-School Night is Tuesday, August 10th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., so come on in and see what 3rd grade is all about.  I look forward to meeting you then.  Please keep checking back as I will update the website to keep you posted on our classroom activities.

Sincerely,

Dana Hagl

Book Log- To challenge my students to continually read, I have decided to have a reading incentive program. Have your child log their books down below and return this sheet to me when they are finished.   Each finished log will earn them a trip to the prize box.  Please make sure they are reading books at his/her own level—not too easy or too hard.  If you need a new page, click on my calendar and on the first Monday of the month it is posted.

Volunteering- I would like to encourage you to volunteer your time in our classroom.  If you are interested in working with small groups of children or attending field trips, you will need a Purple Volunteer Badge.  You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, apply for a background/fingerprint check, and wait for approval.

If you are interested in helping the teacher with other things you will need a Red Volunteer Badge.  You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, and wait for approval.

If you already have a badge from the last school year, please contact the school office to find out if there is anything that you need to do to update your information with the school district.

Homework- Per district guidelines, 3rd grade children should plan to spend 30-45 minutes per day, 4 days per week, at home, as a study period.  If assigned homework is completed before study period is over, the remaining time should be spent reading, studying math facts, studying spelling words, and practicing writing.  Our homework page will be sent home on Mondays.  Your child will be required to complete a spelling practice activity and read for 15 minutes.  Please have your child write their name on each page and turn these in, stapled together, on the following Friday.  In addition to their homework packets, they will also be required to complete a daily math worksheet.  These are sent home each day and need to be turned in the following day.  Please note that on testing days I do not send home math homework.  Testing days fall about every five to ten days, depending on the topic and the class's understanding of the procedures taught.

Classroom Management Strategies- Establishing and maintaining on-task behavior and productive work standards are high priorities in our class.  Our classroom rules are designed to promote a safe and positive place for students to learn where respect and responsibility are stressed.  Students are expected to be on time, be prepared for class with materials and assignments in hand, and always do their personal best.  Classroom rules will be review with your child during the first week of school.

Rewards and Consequences-I use a clipboard to discretely monitor their off-task behaviors.  Each day, if a child is not following the rules, they will get a verbal warning.  If I have to remind them twice a mark goes on my clipboard, If remind them again, they will lose 5 minutes of their afternoon recess.  If they are reminded a third time, they will lose their entire afternoon recess.  If behavior continues to be off-task a note home and/or a trip to the principal's office will occur.  On that same token, on-task behaviors will be rewarded with such things as, stickers, a visit to the treasure box, positive trip to the principals, treats and of course praise.  Understanding that each child is an individual, I may need to modify this system according to the children s needs.

Communications- I believe communication between home and school is vital to your child's success.  To keep you informed and aware of what we are doing, I send home a weekly packet (Friday) with your child's completed work.  Please take the time to review and discuss these papers with your child.  This lets you know if there are areas that your child is struggling with and will allow you the opportunity to work with them one-on-one if needed.  Our math homework should have a star on top.  If your child's homework does not receive a star then there are concepts on that page they need to review and correct.  Please have your child return these pages on Monday to be re-graded.  In addition, I will periodically update the website to let you know what is happening in our class and about any upcoming events.  Should you need to talk to me during the school year the best way to reach me is by email, but you can (951) 244-2585x5207 and leaving a voice mail, if you prefer.  I check my messages daily and will try to respond with-in 24 hours.

Birthdays- Students may bring treats to share for their Birthday; however, we celebrate birthdays once a month at our school.  Please refer to the weekly school newsletters for the dates of these celebrations.  We recommend a simple nutritious snack.  Treat should arrive in the a.m. to avoid classroom disruption.  However, we will wait to sing and enjoy the treat until our afternoon recess.  You may also wish to purchase a Birthday Book with your child's name on it as a donation for our school library.

Fry's Sight Words - Lists 20 Thru 40

Each column represents a list of 10 sight words. Students learn to read each list (in order) and then to spell the words on the lists. There are 1000 Fry's sight words total. Students entering 2nd grade should already know the first 200 words. Students should learn to read at least 400 words by the end of 2nd grade to be on task. Download all the Fry's Sight Words and practice with your child at home.
