My name is Anne Fernandez .I am looking forward to teaching your child this year.I have been teaching first grade at Cottonwood Canyon since 2005.I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies and my Multi-Subject Teaching Credential. I enjoy singing and try to incorporate music into our classroom routines.Although I entered teaching late in life, it is a career that I cherish.
Expectations:
Students are expected to follow school rules and behave appropriately in the classroom.I use a sliding discipline scale for students to monitor their own behavior. Each day they begin in the green zone.Infractions will move the child down to yellow(a verbal warning), orange (a time-out), then red (a note or phone call home or a visit with the principal).Good behaviors are rewarded by moving up into blue then purple for exceptional behavior.Good behavior will be rewarded with points that can be redeemed at the treasure box. The students record their behavior progress on a weekly chart which goes home on Friday.
Homework:
I send a weekly homework packet home on Fridays. They are due the following Friday morning.Homework includes spelling activities, reading comprehension, math practice, and a reading log.Students in first grade should read at least 15 minutes each evening. This can include high-frequency word practice, phonics readers, and story books. Please sign the packet and help your child to be responsible for completing their homework each week. Frequent and consistent reading practice helps them become fluent readers.Your child will only need his/her homework folder on Fridays. Please turn in Frys Word Lists in the envelope on any day that your child is ready to test on a list.
Volunteers:
I invite your participation in your childs education and encourage you to volunteer in the classroom. If you are interested in working with small groups in the classroom or attending field trips, you will need a purple volunteer badge. You may pick up a Volunteer Application at the office, have a TB skin test, apply for a background/fingerprint check, and await approval from the school district. If you are interested in helping with other things, you will need a red volunteer badge. The process is the same for both badges, except that fingerprinting is omitted for the red badge.
Communication:
It is very important that you always have a way to communicate with me.The most convenient way is through email.I usually check email in the morning and after school.Email access is very easy through the school website: ccecubs.com. You may also send a note to class with your child.During the school day, you may leave a voicemail message for me at: (951) 244-2585 x 5200.
Please check your childs backpack daily for important notes from me or the office.

Fry's - 1st Grade - 250 Sight Words (25 lists)
Each column represents a list of approximately 10 sight words. Students learn to read each list (in order) and then to spell the words on the lists. There are 1000 Fry's sight words total. Students entering 1st grade should already know the first 50 words. District standards require students to know at least 200 words by the end of 1st grade to be on task. The CCE 1st grade Staff has set a goal of 250 words for our students. Download all the Fry's Sight Words and practice with your child at home.
