Welcome to Mrs. Burke's page.

Welcome to Second Grade!

Room 12

  Dear Families,

I am delighted to have your child in my class! This is a very exciting time of the year, and I am looking forward to getting to know your child.  I am committed to providing a safe, supportive, and engaging classroom.  I believe that with encouragement and positive support all students can be successful.

I very much value the help and support my students receive from home. Together we can assure that your child has a successful year.  I look forward to an exciting year!

Sincerely,

Sharon Burke

Volunteers

I would like to encourage you to volunteer your time in our classroom. If you are interested in working with small groups or attending field trips, you will need a Purple Volunteer Badge.  You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, apply for a background/fingerprint check, and wait for approval.  If you are interested in helping the teacher with other things you will need a Red Volunteer Badge.  You may pick up a Volunteer Application from the school office, have a TB skin test, and wait for approval. If you already have a badge from last school year, please contact the school office to find out if there is anything that you need to do to update your information with the school district.

Classroom Behavior Management

Establishing and maintaining an engaging classroom environment are high priorities in our class. The classroom rules are designed to promote a safe and positive place for students to learn; where respect and responsibility are stressed.

The behavior management system used in our classroom is a color system. It is very visual and helps remind students, on a daily basis, how they are doing.  Every day each child will begin in the green zone.  Infractions will move the child down to yellow-a verbal warning, if the behavior continues they will move to red.  If a student is on red at the end of the day a behavior notice will be sent home that requires a signature.  Students will have the opportunity to move back to green if they are making a sincere effort to improve.  Students are rewarded for good behavior in a variety of ways such as free time, treats, and the treasure box.

Homework

Per district guidelines, 2nd grade students should plan to spend 20 to 30 minutes per day 4 days a week as a study period. Student will have a "Weekly Homework" packet. The packet will be sent home on Monday and is due Friday of that week. Each night your child should work on this packet. You will find spelling, reading, and writing assignments in the weekly packet. In addition, math homework will be assigned daily and needs to be returned the following day.

Contact Information

I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  I check my email several times a day.  I will respond to you as soon as possible. If you would like to send me an email please use our new web page at ccecubs.com or you can contact me by phone at (951) 244-2585 EXT. 5521.  Welcome to our class. I look forward to working with you.

Weekly Homework Packet

If your child has missing assignments or missing homework, they will be expected to finish it and turn it back into the teacher. The status of the homework chart will not be changed, so that we can look for improvement.

Fry's Sight Words - Lists 20 Thru 40

Each column represents a list of 10 sight words. Students learn to read each list (in order) and then to spell the words on the lists. There are 1000 Fry's sight words total. Students entering 2nd grade should already know the first 200 words. Students should learn to read at least 400 words by the end of 2nd grade to be on task. Download all the Fry's Sight Words and practice with your child at home.
