Welcome to Kindergarten in Room 2PM!

My name is Kristin Barr. I am so happy to be teaching your child this year. I have been teaching for over 10 years. This is my eighth year teaching kindergarten at Cottonwood Canyon. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University, a Master's Degree in Literacy from California State University San Marcos, and a Reading Specialist Credential. I have one beautiful daughter and another on the way this spring.  I enjoy art immensely, and enjoy photography in my "free time!"

Hello, my name is Mary Derifield. I'm looking forward to getting to know your child and helping them have a great year. I have been working for Lake Elsinore Unified School District for 16 years. This is my second year teaching kindergarten with Kristin at Cottonwood Elementary. I recieved my Bachelor's Degree from the University of the Pacific and my Multiple Teaching Credential from California State University San Marcos. I have 3 awesome children and enjoy spending my free time watching them participate in sporting activities.

What's New:

Leprechaun Traps!

Due no later than Monday, March 15th!

Oh my! It’s March, and the Leprechauns are on the loose!  You and your family are going to make a trap to catch them!  Leprechauns are tricky fellows, so you must be creative and tricky when deciding on a way to catch them. Remember, there is no right way to build a Leprechaun trap.

Creating your Trap:

You can make a trap using a variety of household items, such as string, boxes, netting, foil, glue, staples, tape, a clean can, empty paper towel tube, shoebox, paper, plastic spoons, straws, plastic bottle, cereal box, etc.  Be creative!  **Use items you already have. You don’t have to buy new materials unless you want to.

Once you build your trap, don’t forget to add bait to help lure the Leprechaun. Leprechauns love gold, so you might use candy coins or a shiny object.

Helpful Hints:

1.       Rainbows are good to use on or around your trap.

2.     Color your trap green and decorate it with green items (stickers, glitter, etc.)  Leprechauns feel comfortable when surrounded by green.

3.     Leprechauns are also attracted to four leaf clovers.

4.     Leprechauns like Lucky Charms cereal!

5.     A Leprechaun will leave a trail of gold or glitter, so watch for it!

Remember, Leprechauns are small. Don’t make your trap too big!  (Your child should be able to carry it to school by themselves.)  And, the most important thing is to have fun while making your trap!!!

Traps are due on MONDAY, MARCH 15TH.

We will be setting out the traps on Tuesday, March 16th in hopes of catching a Leprechaun on Wednesday morning. There is no guarantee we will catch one, but we will certainly try! We will be writing about our projects, and each student will tell us how their trap works.

Good Luck!

Congratulations to Ayson and Colin!  They are the first two students to know all 50 kindergarten sight words.

Way to go, boys!!!
