Hello! My name is Mrs. Ackerman and I am very
excited to teach third grade for my sixth year at Cottonwood Canyon! I have
three boys that are 18, 16, and 7 years old. They are my pride and joy! I also
have 4 cats, 2 rats, a lizard, and a fish. Yes, the Ackerman household is a zoo,
but it's fun! I have to say that being a parent and a teacher, I get the best of
both worlds! I also understand the commitment and responsibility of the
parent/teacher relationship and how important it is to the success of the child.
However, I do believe the child plays a big role in their own success and this
starts with their own personal efforts. I also believe in the importance of
communication and suggestions and I like to keep the lines open so that a
healthy relationship exists between the parents, teacher, and child. I also
understand that family comes first, therefore I am flexible when need be.
My quest in life has shown me that the big picture is all about balance and I strive to have this in all areas of my life! This is also my philosophy in the classroom. I will ask that the students pursue this balance as well, in learning independence and problem solving skills, in hopes of building self esteem and confidence in trying new things and putting their best into everything they do. This year, the kids will no longer be
learning to read but are reading to learn. This means that they will be combining all of their reading skills that they have learned over the past 3 years, and they will be applying it in a means that will take them to higher levels of comprehension and thinking. However, if kids are behind (or not), the past skills will be reinforced for support.
All in all, it is going to be a very exciting year with lots of laughs and learning! I am looking forward to getting the opportunity to be a part of your
child's growth and I appreciate the gift of helping shape your child's life! With that, I believe in the
whole child perspective, where it's not just about academics but
it's about shaping kind, compassionate, considerate, open minded, higher level thinking little human beings that will be contributing and leading our world in future years and they too will have an affect on others.
My final thoughts are from this Chinese proverb:
You may give a man a fish and you feed him for a day
You may teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime
