Social
Studies Project
We will be studying Cultures and
Customs in Language Arts and Social Studies.
In third grade, the students will learn how different cultures
influence/change in a region. They
will also learn how communities change over time.
As we approach the holidays we thought you would enjoy sharing the
"Family Tree" of your families to help the students understand that
many of the things we have been learning also affect their family.
For
this project you will design a "Family Cereal" which is to include fun
and creative artwork, and a special name chosen just for your cereal which
includes your family name. (Ex.
Smith's Super Pops or Jones Jungle O's)
Whatever you choose should be creative and fun.
Decorate the front of your box in a fun and creative way!
On the back of the box your child is to design a family tree,
complete with interesting facts about your unique family.
Guidelines
Size:
Not smaller that a 10"
x 6" x2" and it can be as large as the larges cereal box on the market
(bigger is not always better). Cover
the box with paper, contact paper, paper bag, or painting it to create a
blank area to work with.
Front:
Picture, Brand, Special Claim or
Offers.
Side panel 1:
Ingredients. Include
important statistics, facts and information about your family.
(Origins, number of people, how many generations and haven in the
United States
, how long in
California
, an interesting/famous person, who immigrated from where and when, etc.)
Box
Top:
Family customs and Traditions.
(Favorite holidays, talents, ways of celebrating - piƱatas, songs,
volunteers, travels to a Grandparents house, etc.)
Box
Bottom:
Student Information. (Include your first and last name, due date,
room number, and grade level.)
Back
of Box:
Create a "Family Tree". Creativity,
artistic appeal, and neatness count! Don't
forget those interesting facts about your family!
Inside the Box:
Bring and share an item to present during your oral presentation.
You might include an interesting picture, drawing, and artifact,
ethnic or family treat. Please
keep the treat simple, like cookies or candy.
Oral
Presentation:
Each student will share his/her cereal box orally with the class.
Be prepared to share how you came up with your ideas, interesting
facts or surprises you learned during the creation process, a family
tradition, and of course your family tree.
This project is worth 20% of your Social Studies grade. It is your
responsibility to complete it neatly, correctly, and on time.
Late project will drop one full grade for each day late.
